PART 1-EBOLA : “How deadly” , yet easy to deal with!

BY : Kingsley Komla Adom (25-09-14)

Like a missile on a war mission, the Ebola virus disease has hit the continent, and has threatened to clear everything in its path.Despite not being an entirely new disease, the devastation has been massive in worst-hit West African countries, thought to have relatively weak healthcare systems.

Not only has Ebola succeeded in breaking down livelihoods and societies in some African Countries,it has also become a threat to regional and global security. The United Nations security council unanimously declared the disease outbreak a threat to International peace.

Many Economies on the continent continue to struggle, and even in their obvious difficulties the disease epidemic would not spare!
Just when Liberia for example was recovering from the excesses of back-to-back civil wars  which ran from 1989 to 2003 in that country, what happens? They get knocked by a huge blow;the Ebola.
You cannot but feel for the small African country with a population of about 4.5 million, bordered by Sierra Leone to its West,Guinea to its North, and Ivory Coast to its East.

The virus has almost ruined everything they had labored for over the past decade, leaving President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf virtually powerless to the torment, and the earlier external assistance is made readily available to them, together with her neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone, the better for the continent.

International Interventions

The disease which has been described as “deadly”,has claimed well over two thousand lives, and continues to threaten the future of countries worst hit by it;Guinea,Sierra Leone and Liberia.
And efforts to stem the tide have intensified in these countries, with the International Community stepping in to assist in what they describe as a ‘global security threat’,Ebola.

Though initial response from the International Community was condescending,it has picked up and gained momentum in the past few weeks. Not only have there been responses from the continental and international bodies, but also individual countries feeling strongly about the epidemic have acted.

The United States of America in partnering other international bodies, recently deployed a 3,000 man military troop to the continent to help contain the disease : the troops were to provide assistance in diverse areas of command and control, logistics expertise, training and engineering support among others.

Humanitarian crisis as it has been distributed in some quarters, officials from the United Kingdom announced a donation of some 700 beds to Sieera Leone on September 19,2014,and the British military engineers were to continue working with the Sierra Leonean government,to establish new treatment centres in that country, having already committed $40 million towards the battle.

The World Bank approved $750,000 for Guinea-Bissau as a health contingency plan to help prevent the spread of the disease, though the country has yet to record any case of the dreadful disease,in response to a request by the government of that country to prepare an action plan in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

As support continues to pour in for the affected countries in the sub-region,embattled Nigerian president,Goodluck Jonathan mentioned to an applauding UN general Assembly in New York that his country has contributed $3.5 million towards helping Liberia,Sierra Leone and Guinea,by providing training and capacity building.

Declaring the outbreak as a threat to Peace and Security on the continent,Secretary General,Ban Ki-Moon announced on September 18,2014 that the United Nations will deploy a new emergency health mission to fight one of the most horrific diseases on the planet. The mission to be called the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response or UNMEER,is to have five priorities:

Stopping the outbreak, treating the infected, ensuring essential services, preserving stability, and preventing further outbreaks,Moon told the security council of the body.

China has been supporting the efforts in fighting against Ebola by providing financial ($32 million in aid to African Nations and International Organizations fighting Ebola in addition to $4.8 million it sent in August),material and medical teams to the most affected countries.

Chinese ambassador to Ethiopia on Friday September 19,handed over the certificate of China’s donation to the African Union at the Headquarters in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia. The regional body (AU) pledged in August to support the fight with $1 million, monies that were to be contributed by Individual African States. The fund (Ebola Fund) has received contributions from Botswana,Nigeria,DRC,Gambia,Malawi,Uganda, and South Africa.

The intensity of the epidemic has won sympathy from across all quarters.India, which has almost 45,000 citizens in Guinea,Liberia,Sierra Leone and Nigeria announced it would be donating $50,000 to help augment World Health Organization fight against Ebola.

At the beginning of September this year,France announced it would be sending 20 specialists in biological disasters to the course. As of August 28,the French foreign ministry had donated almost $200,000 to the “French Red Cross” to aid the fight in Guinea. It has also supported the European Humanitarian Agency’s work against Ebola with more than $1 million in donations.
By September 8,the German Foreign Ministry had also donated $1.81 million and established an action committee on the disease.

The European Union has pledged almost $200,000,and announced that Liberia and Sierra Leone will receive further assistance. In August,Russia announced it would be sending a team of several dozens of scientists to create a mobile laboratory in Guinea, while Canada declared it would be sending $2 million worth of medical equipment to West Africa having previously enunciated more than $3 million in donations to Medecins Sans Frontieres and World Health Organization, followed by a further $1 million, August 18.
Cuba not too long ago disclosed it would be sending 165 doctors and nurses to Sierra Leone to battle the disease, and so have other countries; Turkey,Brazil,Israel among others.

The outpouring of international support, pledges and commitments has been overwhelming, but like Oliver Twist,we want more!It could be better.

INTERNAL EFFORTS;

Sierra Leone
Governments of these countries (Ebola-hit) have had to adopt and adapt tough measures to contain the outbreak.
The disease up until September 20,had killed about 600 people, and the figures continue to sky-rocket.A three-day-lock down in Sierra Leone for instance, intended to undertake a house-to-house exercise,to identify victims of the disease, who were being kept in the homes of their families, recorded a 75% success rate, according to a statement released by the Ministry Of Health in that country.
some streets in the Sierra Leone capital deserted during the lock-down

Media sources confirmed more than 200 dead bodies discovered and 150 new cases uncovered, following the nation-wide lock-down.The breakdown in health systems,in Sierra Leone and the other terribly hit countries have led to the spread of the virus like wildfire,as the people choose to keep their infected relatives, rather than taking them to health centers.

The exercise identified Port Loko,Bombali, and Moyamba districts as hotspots for rapid Ebola Response, and Sierra Leone’s president Ernest Bai Koroma announced these districts would be quarantined, bringing to five, the number of districts to have been isolated and quarantined.

Sierra Leone figures;
*Total Case Count : 1940
*Total Case Deaths : 597
*Laboratory Confirmed Cases : 1745

Liberia

In Liberia however, the case is the more devastating.Casualties of about 1,600 have been so far recorded, though the figures could rise in coming days if intensive public health education and the practice of recommended personal hygiene and activities are not upped.
The Ebola outbreak comes a decade into Sierra Leone and Liberia’s recovery from intertwined civil wars which left hundreds of thousands killed and has been ongoing in the country since March this year.Just when the country continued it’s recovery from the events of the past decade, the virulent disease strikes to cause even more devastation.

A combination of inadequate health facilities and personnel in this country is to blame partly for the widespread nature of the epidemic.
Remote villages have been quarantined.A total of about 15 health personnel have died from the virus in the country, while the country continues to battle with inadequate logistics to combat the spread.
Liberia closed down all schools and quarantined several communities ,while all non-essential government workers were also put on 30 days compulsory leave in July.

The isolation unit at the Elwa hospital in the national capital,Monrovia was revealed to be overrun with cases, and required all external help possible from the International Community to help deal with it.
As the country got overwhelmed, the president became powerless, and strict policy control measures were announced. The president sacked some ten officials of her cabinet because they failed to heed a warning to return from an overseas travel to help the government’s fight against Ebola.

The officials included six assistant ministers, two deputy ministers and two commissioners, who were dismissed for being outside the country without an excuse, according to a statement from the presidency.
“These officials showed insensitivity to our national tragedy and disregard for authority”, it added.
In a desperate call for immediate help,Liberian President,Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, wrote to US president with one clear message;the urgent need for aid,

“I am being honest with you when I say that at this rate,we will never break the transmission chain and the virus will overwhelm us”.

Barack Obama’s response was timely, and his decision last week to commit $763 million in emergency aid funding and 3,000 military personnel to build and staff portable hospitals, labs, and training facilities across the Liberian country was commendable.

In solidarity with Liberia and two other countries worst-hit by the disease,Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) chair,President John Mahama paid a visit to these countries and donated food items to the victims. The items included gallons of cooking oil, bags of made-in-Ghana rice,Cartons of milk, boxes of chocolate drinks among other things.

The Ghanaian president, and in his capacity as ECOWAS chair, having felt strongly about the harsh measures taken by other African Nations,by banning flights from plying these affected countries, spoke against the policies, stating that it was leaving the affected countries lonely in their circumstances, hence the need to as a continent offer help to Liberia,Sieera Leone, and Guinea to fight the epidemic.
Help has since been pouring out for the affected countries to help improve the situation, and hopefully there would be a stop at some point, before the disease renders even more human populations in these countries extinct.

Liberian figures;
*Total Case Count : 3280
*Total Deaths : 1677
*Laboratory Confirmed Cases : 890

Senegal

Authorities in Senegal in August as well, closed down all schools across the country to help curb the spread as well as the border with Guinea initially, defying warnings such a move could be counterproductive. The country also banned flights from three other worst-hit territories;Liberia,Sierra Leone and Guinea in a desperate attempt to prevent the disease from entering the country, but have lifted the said ban,and instead put proper systems in place.

The Senegalese government has since strengthened the systematic checks on aircraft and ships traveling from Ebola-ravaged countries to the capital,Dakar.Meanwhile, boats are boarded for inspection at Senegalese ports before they are allowed to dislodge passengers or cargo.
Senegalese authorities strengthen checks at sea and air ports

On-air regular broadcasts have been designed to communicate prevention advice to the people on both radio and television in various local languages all day, while a hotline has been distributed throughout the country to report suspected cases.
Swift action against Ebola;authorities order all dead bodies to be burnt
A Guinean student (had contact with people who had the virus in his country) who was reported to have breached security rules, and illegally entered the country last August but showed no real signs of the disease.
The Service of the World Health Organization reported this case to the Senegalese health Authorities, soon the young man was isolated at the University Hospital of Dakar. All who were.............to be continued

NATIONAL SERVICE:Hell Before Actual Service

Following the release of postings for the 2014/2015 service year by the National Service Scheme, personnel have had to follow through their respective registration processes as soon as they possibly could, and the earlier the registration was expedited, the better.

Contextual Brief

Some 71,189 personnel, spread across the country have been deployed to undertake National Service duties for this year, with the education sector particularly chief among priority areas with the most numbers,to shore things up in the fields of teaching and learning.

The National Service Scheme according to Alhaji Alhassan Imoro, its Executive Director, has committed well over 35,000 personnel to boost the quality of education across the country, while the others have been spread across the health, agriculture, local government,co-operatives and security sectors.

While the Greater Accra Region has the largest intake in regional postings with some 22,824 personnel,13,537 have been deployed to the Ashanti Region,a further 5,993 have been give postings to the Brong Ahafo Region.

Also, the Volta Region received a total intake of 3,837,Northern Region,5,256 personnel,Eastern Region had 5,611,Western Region,4,590,Upper East Region 2,264,Upper West Region,2,662 and finally, the Central Region had 4,615 personnel deployed to render their one year service to the nation in diverse fields (Banking,Research,Science,Energy,Journalism among other things).
Before these postings were finally effected and released however, there was a long wait!

Long,Anxious And Dithery Wait

They waited anxiously and sometimes with impetuosity after May/June,for the National Service Scheme to effect and release postings for the 2014/2015 year of the mandatory year-long service to the nation.

Various times,by the help of social media, information,(many of which turned out as hoaxes),were bandied about as having been sent from the National Service Scheme, sanctioning the release of postings and subsequent post-placement registration procedures.
Time lagged,Graduates waited, until September 1,2014,when a facebook communication from the National Service Scheme, announced the release of postings for personnel.

As was expected, the impatience of personnel had boiled into angst, the comments that followed the announcement on the National Service Scheme's Facebook page were manifest, and predictably on the day the postings were made accessible, the traffic on the Scheme’s website was “mad”.

From the National Communication Authority,to Islamic Education Project, through to the Volta River Authority,to Biriwa Municipal Primary etc,;personnel were posted to undertake the service.

Scanty Information;Poorly Communicated

If anyone thought the anxious wait and its attendant cloud of uncertainty was over the moment postings were released, perhaps that fellow may want to do a rethink.
What was to be a real HELL of a time, loomed!

On the Facebook Page of the National Service Scheme read on Monday,September 1,2014
“It is announced for the information of all National Service Personnel and the general public that the postings for the 2014/2015 service year have been released.Service personnel should check and print their posting letters from Tuesday 2nd Septembe3r at 18:00 GMT and beyond.Registration at all centres starts from Wednesday 3rd September 2014; a communication signed by the Director,Public Relations ,Ambrose Entsiwah Jnr,National Service Scheme,Headquarters.

*Admittedly, social media has come to stay, and the earlier we get the awakening, the better for everyone, but I dare say,not all graduates in Ghana today are subscribed to social media and its multiple platforms

*Predictably, not many people got this piece of information and as it turned out, registration never started on the said date,Wednesday,3rd September,2014

*Instead, the National Service Scheme conviniently held an orientation of sorts at its regional office in Accra for personnel, posted to public instututions, quasi government organisations and agencies in the Greater Accra Region.

*The said orientation was to spell out how the registration procedures were to be followed;word never reached personnel on this score, hence the turnout was low.
Why organize an orientation when the very people who should feed off the information are not informed of any such activity?

Registration Procedure;Enigmatic,Time-Wasting And Cumbersome

Day 1
As we love to do in this part of the world, the registration procedure was to be strenuous and fraught with all manner of things.Even those who were fortunate to be at the Orientation could not seem to get around the whole activity, thoughtless of those who missed the Orientation,

Esther and Herty both graduates of the Ghana Institute of Journalism were posted to the Ghana Armed Forces headquarters here in Accra, and had their registration center in far away at Tema Community 2.

By 09:30 a.m on Monday,September 8,2014,they were at the centre only to be greeted with incredibly long winding queues. It was sunny;it was dusty and over a thousand personnel had clustered to commence the procedure. There were the informed, the ignorant and the clueless, all stuck up in one area, breaking sweat to get their way around the processes.

It was not unitl about 5:30p.m they had their turn.Eight long hours,in a queue which never really moved on.Reasons?
A visibly distraught Esther would not mince words at all,

“Registration officials from the National service secretariat by virtue of the manual system being used, were dead slow. They have been literally handwriting our particulars into a certain notebook. You can imagine only two people attending to all of us,not only annoying but crazy.

At times when others cut corners, officials looked on powerless and this further delayed activities here,I have been standing here all day,I’m even broken,”she added.
long queues were a regular feature at registration centres

Herty could not agree more. She had also endured one gruelling ordeal, which she says will forever be with her,

“It’s the first time I have had to go through a thing like this. While I thought I could complete this within an hour and head back home,it was not to be.I am still trying to come to terms with exactly what is hindering the national service secretariat from adopting an online system to facilitate this, instead of this time-wasting venture.”

While perhaps, you could say Esther and Herty were unfortunately fortunate, same cannot be said of Alan,a graduate of the the University of Ghana,Legon.Just when it was his turn, officials signaled a close to the day’s session. After staying all of six hours in the queue!
officials were writing the particulars of personnel by hand

He said,"I am disgusted at the whole system. What did I achieve all day here, nothing.I wasted money, time and energy.Traveling from Adenta tomorrow to this place again will be a tall order, there is absolutely no motivation to return here.Sadly, this is Ghana and things will never change."

He had to return the next day to have his turn,a whole day completely wasted,a trip back to Tema from Adenta on Tuesday was one he wanted to avoid, but it was inevitable.

The guys did not hesitate to give the National Service Scheme Officials a telling off when they felt the pace of the exercise was snail-pacing.

At the regional office of the National Service Scheme in Accra, the situation was not different.
Regular features:Long queues, hnadwriting of individual particulars into a book, and slow pace of the processes.
Patience,a graduate from the Ghana Institute of Journalism was horrified by all that had happened on the day.

“It is baffling, really, that in this day and age,we still live and do things like our people did during the stone-age.How much would it possibly cost to have a process like this done online?”,she roared.

Remember, that was only stage one of the registration procedure. The submitted appointment letters were to be endorsed and collected, then sent to the institutions where personnel were posted. While some individuals at certain centers were asked to return the next day,Tuesday, September 9,2014 to pick up their appointment letters duly endorsed by the regional director, others had to come on Wednesday,September,10.

Day 2
Back at Tema as early as 8:00 a.m on Wednesday, personnel asked to report for their endorsed letters had coverged at the registration center.
Apparently the letters had not arrived at the center around the time, and no official was on hand to relay this simple information.
Belatedly, and around 10:00 a.m,they finally arrived and close to a thousand personnel clustered in front of the secretariat to received their letters upon the first mention by one of the officials.

Slowly, one after another, the names were called out and those present got their letters.
Esther and Herty have been posted to the same place, they proceeded to the Ghana Armed Forces (Burma Camp),to continue the registration.

Low and behold,another queue!Unsurprising!
Officers handling the process had threatened to close for the day, it was past 02:00 pm.The persistence of the numbers, compelled them to extend the period.

One after another, personnel got their letters endorsed and filled their particulars, again into a notebook.
OH!They had to make duplicate copies of the original endorsed letters and submit one to the officers at the Burma Camp, and then another plus the original copy,to the district National Service Office at Tradefair. They were only just hearing this for the first time.
Before they could say jack!offficials called it a day;meaning, effectively that they would have to return the next day to submit the duplicate copy, before heading for the District Office.

Another long day,as hectic as the first, came to an end.
“So I would come here tomorrow just to submit a duplicate of the letters? Esther wondered.
Patience on the other hand, had seen her process through in Accra. She would not hide her bitterness:

“The strategy for distributing the letters was terrible. It was very difficult to even hear your name amidst all the noise being generated by trotting foots, and conversations among personnel. One would have thought perhaps, that a microphone would be used, but again in these parts you don’t see some of these stopgaps.”

“In the end someway, somehow,I heard my name, and I’m headed for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, where I have been posted,I anticipate an even slower process there”

Day 3
Thursday,September 11,2014,was another day. From Santa Maria and Sowutuom,Herty and Esther made for the Burma Camp to submit the letter they missed out on doing the day before. And then to the District Office at Tradefair,to complete the entire registration process!

By 01:00 p.m,they were finally done.
What an incredible three days it has been;most parts irritating and tortuous!
What Could Have Been An Easier And Cost Effective Alternative?

The body language of the personnel spoke volumes. They spoke even louder. In spurts and groups, they lamented, they castigated and bashed the National Service Scheme for putting them through what they described as physical torture.
The sentiments were unanimous.Since Day 1,everybody wondered why this process could not have been possible via the internet, and that position did not change.

Why make us come as far as Tema to have our registrations done when we were posted to agencies in Accra?
Why make us come all the way to this place to form limitless queues for two days before we had our turn when we could have sat in the comfort of our homes,to provide the information we came to deliver here?

Why make us go and come two days after registering, for the endorsed letters, when we could have saved money and easily got this done online?

Why make us,upon being to the various institutions we were posted,go again to the district office to submit copies of the appointment letters, when again, systems could have been adopted to cut all these manual bottlenecks?

The consensus was loud!Everyone opined that things could have been fast-tracked and made a tud easier,by getting all the manual work automated.

Judging from these past three or so days one could only wonder if come the actual National Service, personnel would experience a better or worse nine months or less.

One thing is for sure!Like the millions of ghanaians fed up with many of the state institutions and agencies, the National Service Scheme should be in the bad books of personnel,at least for now, even before they commence the service proper!

TODAY's WOMAN SHOW;ESSENTIALS FOR JOB SEEKING GRADUATES

Very few programs/shows on Ghanaian television enlighten me as much as "The Today's Woman Show"on TV3.Well,there are a couple more programs that get me adding a few things to my knowledge bag,I have to say.

However, today's edition of the show blew me away.GOOD JOB! Audrey and the ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is what you get when a very intelligent and eloquent host in the adorable Audrey Selormey meets two other equally brilliant and "accomplished"ladies in one studio.

Of course,Dzigbordi Dosoo as you know is the founder and C.E.O of Allure Africa, lifestyle coach, consultant and talk show host. When it comes to anything image, think Dzigbordi.
Edem Adzaho is also the founder and C.E.O of SPEC consult limited,an international training consultant, and an Author.

These two excellent ladies were on the show to discuss basically essentials graduates need to be relevant and gain employment in the hugely choked job market;white or blue collar specifically with the case of an unemployed HND graduate turned head potter as reference.

Trust me when I say it was a the best show I have watched in months on national television.
Everything the ladies discussed was worth my while, inspiring, informative, educative and indeed an eye-opener,so I decided to highlight a few points so you share in it,if you missed the show, are we cool??? OK

Preparing a CV and prepping up for a job interview

Dzigbordi calls something the ABC of an interview session, what she looks out for, even before your competences and all of that.......

°°°A-Appearance (outward look, physical postures and image as in what you wear and how you wear them)
°°°B-Behaviour (Attitudes;basic courtesies,mannerisms etc)

°°°C-Communication ([verbal and non-verbal] flow and command
over language,near-flawless presentation of ones thought processes and ideas)
She calls them ESSENTIALS for employer consideration on the first interaction, and I totally agree!!!!!!!

You don't want to walk into an interview looking confused inward and outward,do you??
Our educational system has over the years received a lot of flack for being overly grammar-type instead of being skills, and talent oriented. And so many people think their degree is all it takes to land a job,but Dzigbordi says,it's fine to have a job,but in this competitive world, you have to identify your talent, hone it,and get it developed to make some money aside from your salaried job.

Add value to yourself, and ensure you're prepared for the job;the degree alone is not enough.......attempt voluntary internships while after school, learn on jobs, build your personal belief.

Few tips:

Your CV is your selling document, should not have on top of it,CURRICULUM VITAE,everyone knows it is your CV
Do not go on and on about
NAME:
DATE OF BIRTH:
RELIGION:
and on and on.....NOP!!!!!

Simply do your name on top KINGSLEY KOMLA ADOM,because it's your document.YOU,and YOU only.
And then your simple address, phone number (use the +233 thing when
you're actually applying for a job outside of Ghana,if within,do your normal
0242156697).

Your educational status and background must come next if you're a new
graduate..Don't go on and on till kindergarten, and all, maybe Senior High School is enough.........
If you held some big positions, obviously you must include them (school prefect, assistant, etc) not red section leader, senior on duty, cupboard boy etc.
Before you come to professional levels.

If you had tasks at a previous workplace,QUANTIFY them,don't write your duties;

I TALKED TO CLIENTS
I DID PHOTOCOPIES
I DID PRESENTATIONS
I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR ARRANGING FILES

Write instead that;

I TALKED 500 CLIENTS INTO DOING BUSINESS WITH US OVER TWO WEEKS,results were that, the company recorded so so and so amount of revenue!
I RUN over a 1,000 PHOTOCOPIES IN TWO DAYS for project A or B ,bla bla bla

And your hobbies must be exciting, and worthwhile....don't say swimming, watching movies when the last time you even did any of these was a year ago...
Remember Employers consider persons with adventurous hobbies, exciting ones, and you must be as regular with them as possible..

COMPETENCIES:
Don't just write sweeping statements,
Don't write EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS,give examples, two or three
instances what do you do let the panel stop you on that (like ok that's enough).
Do you write articles,do you prepare quarterly reports,do you do Public speaking,do you do media relations etc
ABLE TO USE MICROSOFT TOOLS and DO PRESENTATIONS:
actually demonstrate it..

If there's space,do the referencing, give as many as you have them and their contacts...
In all the CV must sell you, sell sell sell....
Should not be long and boring..Two pages maximum isn't bad.Ensure grammar is good, and presentation is super.

Remember, you'll have to prove/defend everything you put in the CV during the
interview,so if your CV is as good, you should match it......

They (Dzigbordi and Edem)add that,as a lady, you have to get all your hair off your face for an interview, braids are beautiful, they're cool but the interviewer needs to make contact with your eyes and mouth..
The hair flying all over your face,is an unnecessary distraction.......so are colorful hair bands.

Also the job interview is not your time to exhibit excess creativity and your bubbly self with three or four earrings....NO NO NO
That's a turnoff and a distraction too,keep it simple; decent hairdo,one cool earring,and you'll be fine...Not too much flesh showing,bright smile,that's enough.

Your dress speaks volumes on an interview panel..even the colours mean
a thing or two to the panel...
Blue,Grey,Black,White,Orange, all have what they stand for....and may tell the prospective employer what you're communicating non verbally.....take note, and make sure the dress colour is communicating the right things in the right ways.........

You should keep regular eye contacts with all members on the panel.
You should be confident enough, and be prepared for tricky situations, where your ability to think on the butt would be tested....

You must actually listen very well during an interview session, and take charge of your space.
Request a seat if you are not given one,and remember you're matching
what's on your CV,so you must be excellent...!!!!!!

Thanks Dzigbordi,Edem and Audrey, you ladies made my morning!!!!!!!!!!
Guys guys,I hope you've learnt as much as I have from all of these. Its like I've just participated in a seminar................the power of TV!!!!

ARE YOU USING THE "CORRECT" HAND SANITIZERS???????

"As of beginning of August 2014,the brands of hand sanitizers
that had valid registration with the FDA were Sanigel, Clean
Touch, Dial Hand, Samocid,Forever Hand, Steri-7, Carex,Fruiser, Purell, Bremed and High Baby"-excerpted from www.graphic.com.gh's story on Ebola and sanitizers

Aside from the FDA issues, health experts have said that not all the sanitizers can kill germs. Some are specifically anti-bacterial,so cannot obviously deal with viruses,Protozoa and fungi.

They are recommending that we purchase those that can actually work on all germs.

Meanwhile, the sale and purchase of the product has skyrocketed in the past weeks, obviously due to apprehensions people have towards the disease described as "deadly" that has claimed over 1,000 lives in the past few months.

And as you know, people have cashed in on the situation and are indeed making money outta the product.

If you thought any hand sanitizer is that powerful to kill all germs, then you might want to rethink your position;because the experts say, many of these products are largely alcohol-based with either little or no truly disinfecting ingredients.

We are advised that alcohol sanitizers do not control the spread of Ebola virus, since it's a stubborn virus (coated)

Health officials say we should buy sanitizers that are;

1) Approved by the FDA (met the quality control standards)

2) generally germ disinfecting;that's they can kill nearly all manner of germs (bacteria, fungi,Protozoa, viruses etc)

3) Chemically composed of didecydimethyl, ammonium and chloride and not only alcohol

Upon hearing and reading all of these,I quickly looked to check the sanitizer I have been using and OH! It's only anti- bacterial, contains Ethyl Alcohol (62%) which is the active ingredient and the brand was not mentioned among the FDA approved and validly registered hand sanitizers.

Maybe I'd have to go find another. You have too?

THE REGULAR GHANAIAN or THE DISCERNED GHANAIAN,where do you fall???????

#ThereRegularGhanaian according to yours truly,is one who is passive about a lot of things, largely unconcerned about societies negatives, grinds with the everyday flow;that which has become our informal culture owing in part to the kinds of socialization we get from those in our circles-closed or open as well as our "laid back responses to any and everything.

Occasionally, you'll find few standout persons, who despite everything will rise for what they stand for, what they need-and deserve, what ought to be ideal,in an attempt to make society generally better in more ways than one, in their own small corners. These select group,I call #TheDiscernedGhanaian.

They demand their monies' worth at the grocery store, detect and return counterfeit coins to the "trotro" mate on the bus,ask the speeding commercial vehicle driver to hang up on the phone and drive on,impress upon same to reduce speeding on the road, demand that, their local authorities provide their basic amenities, notice expired drugs on the chemical seller's shelf, tell off vehicle occupants who throw refuse through the windows, call unscrupulous persons who throw sputum about town indiscriminately to order.

And OH ! these group of Ghanaians call the ECG and it's allied institutions,to seek answers to why their power is taken without notice, make inquisitions into why water has not run through their taps for weeks,et al.......
What do the regular ones do?,Tell you what, the regular Ghanaian does exactly the opposite and more of what the others do.

# TheRegularGhanaian sits in a troski, and waits until it's full and about taking off, before calling for
the sachet water or chips vendor to come over so they buy.And guess what, they buy with huge
denominations of currency notes...Annoying,isn't it?

In as much as we all need employment,# TheRegularGhanaian reports to work later than official times, and blames it on traffic congestion in the City, meanwhile he expects his salary intact at month's end.Certainly not good enough excuse. If you live far off, just wake up earlier than you do,and you'd be fine,
nobody wants to have a nagging individual for an employee,OR?

# TheRegularGhanaian votes along colour lines, other than issues +policies. This particular one has been with us since Adam. You even have people making illiterate utterances like, even if a "goat"is on the ticket of PARTY A,B or C,I would still vote for them. How on earth are we going to make progress if people think along such lame lines.I'm still struggling to figure out how we got to this point, really!

Everyone lives in a community, bordered obviously by people. And as you'd know, wherever a group of people live, there requires some agreed upon standards and codes by which they must live else pathologies may occur and society may fall. For some reason, these same community members show a careless attitude to anything concerning the area in which they live. # TheRegularGhanaian

doesn't attend community meetings when invited to deliberate on issues to contribute to the development of the area, socially and economically. When this happens, the few "discerned"Ghanaians go and make the decisions for them! What do they do next?-They whine
and whine over these very decisions, but who cares, really?

# TheRegularGhanaian fails to report unscrupulous persons who engage in illegal electricity and
water connections in the neighborhood

# TheRegularGhanaian remains totally unconcerned when his neighbor turns on the volume of
the music to deafening decibels. He doesn't say jack!

# TheRegularGhanaian front desk exec wears a visage like she's been forced to do the work. Hostile,Non-smiling,Get off if you can't do the job, sod!.The last thing anybody wants to have is to get to a company with loads of trouble on their head only to have a front desk exec add hers too, instead of helping de-burden the client.

If only they knew what a simple smile can do to people, they would perhaps turn for the better.
# TheRegularGhanaian lecturer comes to class and everything he teaches, literally can be found word for word on the first google search!

Yet,for some weird reason they are quickest to demand book and research allowances from government, and would strike if these fees are not forth-coming.
Maybe we should be looking at the concept of equal pay for equal work done ;just saying.

Meanwhile,# TheRegularGhanaian student also waits till it's a week to the exam before he starts reading his damn books, but expect to pass the exams.Where does this ever work???

And following the introduction of Web 2.0 and the invention of the internet,#
TheRegularGhanaian spends half the day or more on social media, even while at work.
(Facebook, twitter, instagram,Pinterest, google+,vobolo, whatsApp,tango, viber,et al).Maybe employers must have a policy on social media in their workplaces to check some of these lousy attitudes. If the time spent on social media were to enhance the company's production and profile cry, maybe good enough, but when it's spent talking the latest fashion trend, gossip in town, entertainment spoof, and all, then it's totally out of place-abhorrent!!!

On our roads,# TheRegularGhanaian driver throws on his seatbelt only when approaching a police stop.
But how difficult,a task is to wear a
seatbelt?and even more, when it's supposed to do you good? It appears a lot of work to have a seatbelt on for most drivers, this beats me!

In our communities,# TheRegularGhanaian builds in the waterway.why? That portion of land is cheapest. The ripple effect of these are disastrous.Whenever it pours, life, property
and livelihoods of others are lost.Wondering when we'll get responsible in our thought processes sometimes. As if that is not enough trouble,# TheRegularGhanaian mason steals your materials in bits from your work site, for his own underground works cement, blocks, sand, chippings etc

Everybody wants to take advantage of the next person. So much hate in our living.
Road accidents are mainly caused by driver error.Though many of these crashes are avoidable,it appears adhering the basic road markings, and signs are an awful lot of work for some drivers and road users generally.# TheRegularGhanaian driver stops not to allow pedestrians cross the road at the various pedes-crossings.

So he knocks down pedestrians almost all of the time, and even worse, speeds away, how sad!!!!!!!

# TheRegularGhanaian Crosses the road even when a footbridge is hanging just above it.
Guess what;it's time wasting to go over all of that, before getting to the other side.they think. If they valued life a bit more than they currently do,maybe they'll never risk it on the roads, especially the highways.

Values and beliefs are integral to every living being. The least anybody can have are beliefs and values which guide them in their everyday lives. For many, religion is 50% of their lives!the other 50 is distributed among work, marriage, social activities, school, among others.Though religion borders on a person's belief in an object of worship, many people
demonstrate their core religious beliefs outwardly.

But # TheRegularGhanaian goes to church every Sunday, but returns every time unchanged,in attitude, deed, and thoughts. This leaves me to believe we're living in a great deception. The mere presence or otherwise at a worship centre says very little about us,our deeds and actions are the amplifiers of what is within.

Governance, they say is a shared responsibility between leaders and followers.Despite the fact that majority of the tasks need leadership direction to succeed, citizens also play an active role if society is to remain progressive, but # TheRegularGhanaian blames governments for the mess he creates in his house, culminating in tonnes of refuse left uncollected.

How on earth,do we expect government to descend to our doorsteps to collect refuse created by "us"???where is this heard?

Still in our immediate communities,#TheRegularGhanaian has water not running through his tap for weeks, what does he do?Everything except contacting the GWCL,GWA,and the other water distribution agencies.
If we don't ask the service providers questions, obviously nothing would change. They'll assume all is well with us.In any case,we pay for these services and have the right to demand our due of the bargain.

Furthermore,#TheRegularGhanaian has been living in Accra all his life, but doesn't know the national theatre, airport, the stadium, indece square, etc. But can you blame them? They have nothing doing there,so...Certainly not good enough.

#TheRegularGhanaian sits in a troski and can't tell the driver to hang up on the call, and drive them safely to their destination. One of the primary reasons road car ages occur. In these parts, the more you speak up,the more you are branded "too knowing".I think that's one of the reasons we've adopted the worse option of silence.
What if you fail to speak up,and the feared happens, who would we blame?????

#TheRegularGhanaian doesn't do any followups when they are given awfully poor service by the telecom operators.
Call them, alert them of their failings, let them sit up.It is only by doing these that we can bring the best out of them, and get ourselves satisfied while having our monies-worth.If service remains terrible after these, you can always change managers,or???

#TheRegularGhanaian looks on in a troski while a fellow passenger throws refuse through the window.
Then afterwards,we blame governments for our dirty surroundings. We are our own enemies, and until we mend our ways,we'll remain here. And when we contract the diseases,we'll pay good money to get medication, and those that cannot afford May die!

After contracting the diseases,#TheRegularGhanaian purchases expired drugs from the chemical seller and fails to return them, neither does he alert the attendants.
He'll take it and suffer the repercussions, which are sometimes dire.

There are a million and one more things the regular Ghanaian does on a daily basis. This piece cannot obviously capture all of these, the whole idea is to establish the fact that, many of us live passively in our space, like it's just us in the world.

This however is a not-too-good attitude,if we are to grow together,we have to do the exact opposite of what #TheRegularGhanaian does.

Take charge of your space, know your boundaries, know what you ought to do to make society an even better place.

Be that #DiscernedGhanaian, and lead the way, everyone would find a place in own small circle to do same!!!
The lethargic attitude, lukewarm and carefree posture never won anybody a Nobel peace price,or an Oscar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY I THINK PETR CECH WILL LEAVE CHELSEA

Thibaut Courtois trains with the Chelsea first team @ cobham
EXCLUSIVE:According to goal.com,chelsea fc has told Petr Cech he
can find a new club in order to
make Thibaut Courtois the No. 1,says Akpi Roland on Facebook, this is b**ls*t,he adds....

My response:
I don't know if it's factual the way it's stated, but the truth of the matter is that, petr cech will leave Chelsea before the close of the off season.why do I say so?

Long before Thibaut Courtois joined this summer,he stated clearly that,he's not coming to Chelsea to warm the bench, the only reason he'll join the team is,if he's guaranteed first team starts, that's regular action.

And so he's joined the first team,it' means some kind of agreement has been reached that he'll play games regularly, correct?OK

Now the conundrum: Thibaut Courtois has been the best goal keeper in Spain for the past two or more seasons.

Granted,he had to dislodge long-standing real Madrid goal keeper, who's been one of the best if not the best for over a decade, that's no mean feat.

It would therefore be a complete waste of talent, for such a player to BE a second choice keeper at Chelsea, especially judging from his consistent performances for Atletico Madrid over the past three seasons.

Meanwhile,Petr Cech has also been first choice at Chelsea for a long time, and has remained consistent over the years for the team.He even won the golden glove in the premier league last season.

Chelsea's long serving goal keeper,Petr Cech,

An outstanding goal keeper and faithful servant at Chelsea since his arrival at the club.

He (Cech) has stated that he'll not also be second choice, and will fight to remain Chelsea's top glovesman, the coming season.

The confusion arises as Mark Schwarzer is given a one year deal to his expired contract,at the club (renewal).

Following this one year extension,Jose Mourinho sang his praise, and confirmed Mark was going to be his second choice goal keeper.

OK,so if Mark is second choice, which of the two top keepers (Cech & Courtois) will be first choice, and which of them, will give up that position?

Considering Mourinho's recent comments about Courtois,it looks like he would be first choice, and he  has said also that, the Belgian is the future of Chelsea.

So if Thibaut Courtois is first choice, and Mark Schwarzer is second choice, where does Cech fall?

Meanwhile, as regards to the premier league's rules of a homegrown quota for every team, that's 8 homegrown players at least, and not more than 17 foreign players out of the 25-man squad to be named before the commencement of the league season,Mourinho said we have, one more than the official minimum of foreign players(17) following the arrivals of Drogba,Costa,Filipe Luis,,hence, one must not be registered for the season.

He subsequently named three players, one of whom has to leave (of the foreign players), to trim the squad down, and possibly reduce the foreign player ( minimum) to 17.

The players he listed were Petr Cech,Fernando Torres, and John Obi Mikel.

Out of these three, two are not considered homegrown, and are also described as foreign, that's  Cech, and Torres.

So even if Mikel leaves, there's still a foreign player that has to make way.

After all,Mikel is considered homegrown because he's been playing in England since he was seventeen or eighteen (he's now 27).

Following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Everton, however, the team appears short on striking options, aside Diego Costa, and he's not leaving also considering Mou recently confirmed he (Torres) has a future at Chelsea, which leaves only one player,Cech,to the axe.

Even without all.of these, personally, cech being relegated to bit-part roles will be disrespectful, considering he's still at the peak of his game.

He would walk into the first team of any club (maybe except Bayern), so if
he'll not be first choice, why not leave to a team where he'll get regular action,?

Amidst all of these,Petr Cech is not short of suitors. The likes of Monaco,Paris St Germain, and recently,Real Madrid are thought to have made enquiries and some tabling initial bids for the Chelsea man.

MY TAKE; Upon all the above arguments (that's if they are at all),it's best for Cech to leave to play games week in,week out, because the arrival of the Belgian, spells a new era,or dynasty at Chelsea which will not have Cech as a part.

That notwithstanding,I think he's still an excellent keeper, and one of the best around momentarily..............

Full credit to him,he's a good man,an excellent professional, and one who is phenomenal at his game, methinks.

"FOS K3 BRONIWAAWU" PANTS TOO????????-ebeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
"Used underpants" are gaining popularity among a section of the Ghanaian public due in part to their relatively cheaper prices.(they have always been with us,I think)
Other reasons why anyone will patronize such used undergarments are not well documented, but it does not take rocket science to know that these garments have dire health defects.
Our homes and markets have become dumping grounds for some of these things such as (used appliances-referigerators,electronic devices-computers,television sets,clothes-shirts,trousers,skirts,shoes among many others).
Authorities claim to have enforced a strict ban on the importation of a couple of these goods, notably used refrigerators et al.
I am not too sure what the situation on used clothes, generally is.
Much as it's not ideal to use some of these "goods",it appears a particular class of people in this country necessarily have to make do with these,alternative-less,obviously for economic reasons.
I would not sit on here and pretend to be all blameless, many times I have had to purchase some of these used clothes "fos" and "broniwaawu" and shoes too.
But to think people go as far as literally buying and using boxer shorts and what we call "pants" which have been used already and imported into the country,is someway.
On Friday afternoon,on my way to the Madina station from my rounds,I saw a shocking spectacle-maybe not too shocking but instructive......
A rush for these "used underpants" caught my attention,"bebree one cedi, one cedi"-to wit (plenty for one cedi-my hustler friends know what I mean).
This middle aged vendor had set up calling out for customers to come around and pick them up,cheap.......pants and boxers, and I obviously could not help but get these pictures.
I am not a health officer, and certainly not the first to admit that wearing some of these used undergarments can be disastrous-to our selves.
Perhaps our more competent friends in health circles can help us better appreciate the harm we are causing ourselves and advise appropriately-who knows,we may just think not twice or thrice, but maybe four times before attempting to buy some of these used undergarments moving forward.
